Official Opening of SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute (SJTU-APGI)

28 November 2019 marked the official opening of SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute (SJTU-APGI) after its incorporation on 25 June, 2019. Coinciding with this event is the establishment of its General Affairs Office and four other centers - Antai Asia-Pacific Center, Urban Governance Research Centre, CREATE Program Management Center, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Southeast Asia Affairs Center.  The main unveiling ceremony, hosted by Dean of SJTU-APGI, Prof. Peng Yinghong, was held at the Theatrette of the CREATE Tower Building. Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, Mr. Hong Xiaoyong and SJTU Party Secretary and Chairman of University Council, Prof. Jiang Sixian, jointly inaugurated SJTU-APGI.

Ambassador Hong delivered a welcome speech at the beginning of the ceremony. Emeritus Senior Minister and former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong as well as Education Minister Ong Ye Kung sent congratulatory letters on the occasion with hopes that the new institute would foster social development and closer ties between Singapore and China. Mr. Ong also mentioned that SJTU, being one of the first universities to bring its programs outside of China, has to date, benefited some 600 graduates in Singapore. He also expressed his hopes that the new institute will continue its commitment in nurturing business and research talents in Singapore, spark more bilateral collaboration and exchanges.

Keynote speech by SJTU Party Secretary and Chairman of University Council, Prof. Jiang Sixian


Representing Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Jiang Sixian gave a keynote speech, in which he reviewed the history of SJTU and future plans for SJTU-APGI, adding that this marks a new phase for SJTU’s international education, and friendship between the two countries.


Vice Dean of SJTU-APGI, Prof. Dong Ming, introduced SJTU-APGI’s planning and vision. SJTU-APGI positions itself as an extension of SJTU’s education and research efforts, as well as a platform for overseas resource integration and internationalization. The overall goal of the institute is to promote the innovation of systems and integration of resources, and in turn, open up new global prospects in the fields of education and research. The ceremony also saw Mr. Lee Yi Shyan, Mr. John Wu, Mr. Wu Hsioh Kwang, and Mr. Kuok Khoon Hong officially appointed as the Honorary Directors of SJTU-APGI.
